Passive web browsing most popular tablet use case

A recent survey by goo Research, reported on by japan.internet.com, looked at mobile devices, the fourth regular survey in the series. This report focused on tablet computer use.

Demographics

Between the 11th and 15th of May 2012 1,073 members of the goo Research online monitor group completed a private internet-based questionnaire. 53.0% of the sample were male, 16.5% in their teens, 18.3% in their twenties, 21.2% in the thirties, 16.0% in their forties, and 28.0% aged fifty or older.

The big news recently in tablets is the official announcement of Microsoft Surface, so in lieu of a graph, here?s a video:

Research results

First, people were asked what portable devices they owned. 68.1% said they had a standard feature phone, 49.8% a notebook or netbook computer, 34.9% a portable games machine, 32.9% a portable audio player, then 32.8% a smartphone. There were other devices with lower percentages, but barring tablets they were not reported. Note that the previous survey from three months ago (not translated here) had 72.4% with feature phones and 26.1% with smartphones, indicating how rapidly the smartphone sector is growing in Japan.

Regarding tablets, 7.5% reported that they owned one. These 81 people were then asked this.
