The Various Phases Of An ACL Physical Therapy

5:11 am Health and Fitness

The ligament which joins the tibia to the femur bone is known as anterior cruciate ligament or ACL. It is positioned diagonally in the center of both of these bones. This ligament provides support and enables the knee to rotate. According to the American Academy of Orthopedic Surgeons, close to a hundred thousand people each and every year must go through reconstruction surgery due to knee ligament tears which can be generally obtained while playing sports. Following an ACL surgery, individuals are recommended to undergo acl physical therapy to make the knee heal faster. Some people need to go through the therapy for four to six months to ensure that their knees and legs to function normally.

Soon after the surgery, the individual needs to go through a post operative rehabilitation. The patient will be instructed to see a physical therapist thrice a week. Right after eight weeks, the visits might be decreased to merely two times a week. For the first couple of weeks, you will do a few strengthening exercises. This will help to reduce inflammation at the same time improve your knee muscles. You have to continue doing these routines on days that you do not visit your therapist. The exercises should be done for thirty minutes to an hour each day.

Possibly after two months of therapy, once your knee has already healed, your physical therapist can give you a more intense knee conditioning exercises. At this time of your acl physical therapy, you may be recommended to lift weights and perform some cardio workouts such as on a treadmill or bike. In addition, you?ll be given new routines that are designed to bring back the stability and balance of your knee. You may even have the option to get this done in fitness or health clubs instead of going to a medical therapy facility.

The rest of the two to three months of your rehabilitation will include balance, stability and strength exercises that will examine the full restoration of your injured knee. One of many exercises done at this point of your therapy is called the box jump. You?ll be asked to jump sideways onto a wooden box. The box is going to be placed beside you. When you have jumped on to the box, you?ll then jump once more landing on the other side of the box, with both your feet landing together. At some point, if you have regained the complete functioning of your knee, you?ll be able to jump on the other side of the box easily.

You could feel some discomfort and pain throughout these phases of your acl physical therapy. This is normal because your knees as well as the muscles around it are still on the process of healing. This may take some time therefore a lot of patience is required.
