HAVANA ? Imprisoned American subcontractor Alan Gross has one last chance in a Cuban court to get a reduction or dismissal of his 15-year sentence. He is appealing his conviction for sneaking communications equipment into Cuba before the island's Supreme Court.
The 62-year-old Maryland native's case has strained ties between the Cold War enemies and undermined already faltering efforts at rapprochement. Gross was working on a USAID program meant to foster democracy on the Communist-run island when he was arrested in 2009.
American officials say privately they hold little hope Gross's conviction will be thrown out altogether following oral arguments Friday. But they say the hearing could clear the way for his release on humanitarian grounds.
